Scottish Apprenticeship Week: Caithness Business Fund Secures £150k Boost for Local Talent & Skills Published on 27th February 2026

£150k Investment Strengthens Skills Pipeline for the North Highlands

As Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2026 shines a spotlight on the vital role apprentices play in Scotland’s economy, Caithness Business Fund is celebrating a renewed £150k investment to expand apprenticeship grant funding for more businesses in the North Highlands.

Following the strong success and impact of previous investments, and responding to growing demand from local businesses, the £150k award from NRS Dounreay (£100k) and the NDA (£50k) directly supports the growing momentum for diverse apprenticeship opportunities across the region.

This latest funding expansion will unlock even more apprenticeship pathways, enabling SMEs to equip young people with vital skills for the North Highlands’ economy, both now and in the future.

Trudy Morris, Director of the Caithness Business Fund and CEO of the North Highland Chamber of Commerce, commented:

“During Scottish Apprenticeship Week, we’re celebrating the 24 apprentices and 20 local businesses already supported through previous investment rounds since 2024. With thanks to NRS Dounreay and the NDA, this significant new boost of £150k will help many more. This sustained investment from our funding partners reflects our shared and ongoing commitment to building a skilled workforce for the North Highlands, ensuring our region thrives.

We are proud that the Fund is helping businesses create a pipeline of home‑grown talent. These young people are already having a tangible impact in our region, adding value to our businesses and strengthening our region’s capabilities. There is real momentum for businesses in our region to get involved in apprenticeships. Support from the Fund has helped accelerate this, with some businesses inspired to take on an apprentice for the first time. Applications to the Fund are open throughout the  year, and I would encourage any business interested, whatever stage they are at, to get in touch.”
